Donovan Mitchell and Ben Simmons were the top two candidates for the Rookie of the Year award for the 2017-2018 season. Why Simmons, you ask? Wasn’t he in his second year with the NBA? The answer is yes, but he got another shot at the award because he sat out injured during the 2016-2017 season.
Mitchell didn’t do much trash talking, and he was gracious in his congratulations after Simmons was named Rookie of the Year in June, but he did let his clothes do some talking in the lead up to the award.
Before a game against the Warriors, Mitchell showed up in a hoodie printed with the dictionary definition of “rookie.” His campaign continued the next day when he was seen prior to a game against the Portland Trailblazers with another hoodie that read “Rookie?”
Mitchell is known for his love of shoes. Check out this video showcasing a suitcase of footwear “for the weekend” including his favorites: a custom pair of Louis Vuitton X Supreme Yeezys.
Mitchell’s hair…er, haircut…was the focus of a trailer promoting a new web series called Rookie on the Rise. The 15-episode Young Hollywood series shares the story of Mitchell’s pursuit of the Rookie of the Year title. In the trailer, Mitchell gets a cut from his hometown barber in preparation for All-Star Weekend. Watch it here.
Mitchell has described his signature haircut as a “bit of a mohawk with a fade on the side.”
Mitchell was named to the NBA All-Rookie First Team this year and also won the NBA Slam Dunk contest. At just 21 years old, expect many years of greatness ahead for Mitchell.
